Laveno-Mombello is a beautiful city in the North of Italy. It is situated at the shore of Maggiore lake. We have spent there a beautiful week, you can read about it in our post here. In this post we will tell you what you can visit being in this beautiful place. Here we go.
First thing to do: Cable cars in Laveno-Mombello, Italy
One of the most obvious things to do in Laveno-Mombello, Italy, is to get on the top of the mountain with the cable road. It is not that visible from the ground, so if you do not know about it, you might not find it.
Our friend Samuele brought us to the cable cars that surprisingly were just around the corner next to our apartment. They ascend to the height of 1000 meters!
On the way, the cable road goes quite steeply up (and down on the way back). Cabins are open or closed, you can choose what you like more.
The view from the top is amazing! From there people do parasailing and it looks like a lot of fun. There is a restaurant and a hotel on the top of the mountain. The prices were quite ok, when we checked it.
It takes around 15 minutes to get up, so you have enough time to enjoy the view on the way. There is also an option to walk up if you are fond of trekking. We were happy with getting there by cable car.
Second thing to do: visit Forte Castello and its park
The fortress Castello was the central element of the Austrian defense system in the times when the Empire owned this part of Italy. The walls of fortress comes from the Medieval times. The tower inside was raised as a memorial to the battle of Garibaldi’s Hunters against Austrians.
The park and the fortress itself are quite hidden from the town. You only see a hill with a lot of trees. We went there out of curiosity, because we supposed it should have had a nice view to the town from above.
The park turned out to be a quiet and peaceful place. We haven’t met many people, just a few ones doing some jogging or walking with dogs. There are many pine trees and, evidently, many squirrels as we saw a lot of open nuts everywhere.
The tower is locked with a fence, but if you are determined enough, you can get inside. We saw traces of human’s activity on its territory. We didn’t get inside, for we just wanted to see the surroundings.
You can have rest on benches that stand every here and there. Unfortunately, we haven’t found any with a view to the town because of the trees, but it is not important. The atmosphere in the park is worth just staying there and and relaxing.
We found a place with a view to the town, even though we saw it through the trees and bushes. Laveno-Mombello, this little pearl of Italy, looked amazing from there, do not miss out on it.
Third thing to do (by order, but not value) around Laveno-Mombello, Italy: visit Agra
Maggiore lake is a fabulous place to visit. It is incredibly beautiful looking from the ground level and the mountain top with the cable cars. However, there is a place, from where you can have another breathtaking view to it: a tiny village in the mountains.
Our friend Samuele enlightened us about it, and we are very grateful to him for this. He also prepared a detailed guide on how to get to this beautiful place. We hadn’t checked the pictures of Agra on purpose, to not spoil the surprise. It was the right decision!
To get there we took 2 busses with a change in Luino, a small town at the shore of Maggiore. Busses from Luino to Agra circulate only during the school time. We took the one with arrival around 10 am.
Most of the time we were the only passengers on the busses. It was quite surprising. We expected to travel with students or locals, but apparently they all were somewhere else.
When we arrived to Agra we followed the map drawn my Samuele to get to the forest. There are two paths that you can go, we started with more Southern part.
The forest itself is amazing. It looks like a fairy tale.
There must be some wild animals somewhere close, we heard some noises. Otherwise it is super quiet there.
We visited two viewpoints: Giro del Sole and Belvedere Mandelli. From both of them you can see an amazing perspective to Maggiore and the mountains.
Unfortunately, when we were there, it was cloudy, but nevertheless, the view was outstanding.
We’ve spent around two hours in the forest and at the viewpoints. During this all time we saw like 4 people. So we think it is a not very known touristic attraction, which is so hard to find. We enjoyed being there alone, among tall trees and birds. If you turn out in this region of Italy, close to Laveno-Mombello, this is a must-do for sure.
Laveno-Mombello is definitely worth of visiting
As you can see, Laveno-Mombello is a great place to visit in Italy with various things to do. You can enjoy Italian food and then burn some calories going uphill. During the Summer time you can sail or swim. There are beaches all along the lake Maggiore.
We had a marvelous time there and strongly recommend you to visit Laveno-Mombello too.
It is a perfect place to slow down your life a bit and enjoy big and little moments at this beautiful lakeside.
Great content! Super high-quality! Keep it up! 🙂
