Skopje, Capital of North Macedonia

Situated between Bulgaria, Albania, Kosovo and Greece, North Macedonia has its own charm. It managed to surprise us with its hospitality, beautiful nature and delicious food.

Skopje – capital of North Macedonia

North Macedonia is a quite small country. Because of that, it is easy to travel from the capital city to such remote places like Ohrid. It takes only several hours to cross the whole country.

Its capital, Skopje, is located in the North. It is just a few kilometers away from Kosovo.

North Macedonia has a lot to offer to visitors. For example, Skopje. It is being renovated, maybe even a bit too much, according to locals. Dozens of monuments were installed around the city. They resemble those from the Roman empire. However, they were built as recently as 2012. It was done in frames of the Skopje 2014 Project.

Main attractions of Skopje

There are a few main attractions in the city:
– The Old Bazaar: the second biggest bazaar after the one in Istambul.
– Mount Vodno: where you can take a cable car to reach the top and get amazing views of the city.
– Matka Canyon: a lake built between to mountains which offers great paths for trekking enthusiasts.

The city center itself is a very nice place to take a walk. As many European cities, there are many fountains where you can get some refreshing drinking water.

Ohrid – a pearl of North Macedonia

There is also Ohrid, situated in the South of the country. It lies next to the lake with the same name: one of the oldest in the world. There you can enjoy water activities, because it is perfect for swimming. For sightseeing visit ancient churches and a castle with a panoramic view to the lake and the city.

Food

Food in North Macedonia is quite simple but very tasty, with Ottoman and Balkans influences. You can find traditional salads, grilled meat and vegetables. Also delicious desserts such as baklava, tulumba and many others are an outstanding experience.

Transport

The country has two airports serving low cost flights. For this reason it is becoming a very interesting destination.

Within the country there is a well developed net of local busses. Tickets you can easily buy everywhere. For example, in touristic offices or at the offices of the bus lines.

Money

In North Macedonia they have their own currency (Macedonian denar, MKD). It is easy to get it because there are many exchange offices located all around the city. They accept credit cards not everywhere. Therefore make sure you have enough of cash with you.
